I lived in Virouqua Wisconsin until I was 9 years old. Used to fish with my father on the Mississippi. Am planning a motorcycle trip the full length of the river next year. I welcome suggestions as to time of year as best, stops and amount of time to allow. At present plan to ride from San Francisco are to headwaters, pick up wife at Minneapolis and ride to end of river. She will then fly home from New Orleans and I will ride home. Has anyone done such a trip? I am a very experienced log distance motorcycle touring person. Any info or suggestions are welcomed. Thanks

I have discovered that my great grandmother, Maria Lasetta Adrian, was born in your area in 1863 or 1864, we think. Her parents were Charles Adrian and Catherine Munch. She married John E. Ellis from Waterville, Ohio and later moved to Emmetsburg, Iowa. They had an infant son who died, another son, Elmore Sebastian Ellis born in 1860, and a daughter, Inez Ellis. Charles and Catherine Adrian and the Munches moved to Emmetsburg and some time ...I believe. I am interested in corresponding with anyone who might have information about this family. Thank you very much. I have traveled a bit in your part of Wisconsin and have admired the beauty. Now I find that I have a tie to that area. I can't wait to get to visit again!J. Paustian

I was born in Wabasha in 1947 and lived there until 1953,after which we moved to W. St. Paul where my folks still live. My Mom's side of the family (the Carrolls and theKassabaums) were long-time residents of the Wabasha area.Every time I visit my folks, we drive down to see how thetown has changed, visit some of my Mom's old friends, andhave lunch at the Anderson Hotel. I miss it and the viewof the wonderful Mississippi.

I am originally from Lake City, MN. I was raised there from the time I was born,1979 until 1992. My father Ron Bruske passed away in the year of 1992. That was when i moved to Indiana. I try to get back there every year to visit. I miss all the beautiful bluffs and the river.I would love to get some kind of info or pictures of the house I grew up in (R.R.1 Box 201) It was the 2nd big white house on the left down the road from the Jewel Nursery. Lake City is a wonderful town and I miss it a great deal. I love the site. I look through it frequently. I greatly recommend people to visit this town. Or if anyone knew my father, Ronald Lee Bruske, please email me. Thanks.

I found this site last evening and was thrown into hours of memories which climaxed in looking for the photo albumn I'd put together on the return of my stay at the Riverside Inn on Main St. in 1992. Our hosts were the lovely Bill and Judy Burns and their dog Tyler. They made my mother and I so very welcome. My father was born in North McGregor, 1906, and his birth certifcate was the 19th signed by Dr Alice or Mae Clark. This was the reason for our visit. We spent that summer retracing his footprints all the way to Calgary, Canada. My siblings and I were brought up with stories of life on the Mississippi, but we knew little of his family. His father Joseph Wm Watson married a Calliefuella Hanon or Manson,(we can't read the writing on the certicate) from Minnisota. Joseph died and Callie remarried, we think, to a Niel or O'Niel and had another son, maybe two. While in your little town we were interviewed, for the paper, by Lucy Rodenberg, who then suggested we look in the library achives.Oh! How interesting. Learning what life was like for my father around 1910-1930 was fascinating. If you havn't already looked into your towns history, thats a good place to start. Wonderful.May Huebsh, 90 years young , opened the museum after attending church. She was a mind of information and as "neat as a new pin".John Bickel invited us to "America House" to show us his collection of McGregor's history. A memorable couple of hours for us.We visited Pikes Peak--beautiful view of the river.Bridgeport, Patch Grove, Mount Hope, Boscopel church and Praire du Chien all had something to offer the visitor.I think we were driving into Lansing when we came across our first baseball game played by the youngsters of the town. As I've still Dad's glove and ball from the thirtys, the sight of this sent a thrill through me.Guttenberg--we found a seat and watched the world go by. We didn't want to leave the river that day. It was so peaceful. We enjoyed eating at the " Captains Reef" in McGregor and the "Black Angus" in Praire du Chien. The short time that we stayed in McGregor left us with a feeling of geniune warmth for the people and an urge to return someday. I will.Thankyou so much for this website, your living within a gem.

The Great Mississippi River Road is one of Wisconsin's Best~Kept Secrets!Lets keep it a SECRET ! HA! OK ?Its simply "VERY MAJESTIC and Awesomely Beautiful" !I just discovered it this summer and want to go back in the Fall to see the Autumn colors on the Bluffs !My greatgrandmother was born in Dodgecenter ,MN. and my Great grandfather was a lumberjack in Adams county,WI.He drove a "TEAM" of Horses with a load of LOGS on a wagon all the way to Dodgecenter from Adams ,WI. around 1875 and had to cross the mississippi river (somehow)? He met my great grandmother and married her!Anyway, i always wondered where he crossed the mighty Miss?I find the The "RIVER" incredibly "ROMANTIC" and full of unknown "folklure" and history yet to be discovered, Iam sure there are many old family stories like mine of historical significance even if it only personal .Oh My great grandmother's husband was also, the nephew ofthe Governor of Wisconsin "William Dempster Hoard" 1889-91.so, you can see my interest and ROOTS go way back in Wisconsin to say the least. ha!anyway, keep up the Good work!~~~YOUR WEBSITE IS GREAT!~*~ THE GREAT RIVER ROAD is one of the last truely AMERICANUnspoiled Scenic Wonders !! Good Luck in Preserving its History and Heritage! Thanks, John G.BylskiUW-Madison

As a former short-time resident of Trempealeau back in 1979 it is always good to see pics, etc., of my old stomping grounds, I spent some fun nights playing music with Eddie Allen and the crew in such places as Sportsman's in Tremp. and the old Mill Road Cafe in Galesville, some really great times! Though I finally moved back home to the central coast of California, my time on The River still shines!

I am writing trying to find out some information about a picture (copy) that I own. I brought it from an estate sale. The person I brought it from said they brought it from an estate sale. It is a approximately a foot long and 6 inches in height. It has an indian girl on one side and two indians in a conoe sceen. It is dated 1911. But no artist has signed it. The frame is decorated with an embossed conoe, a gun, and indian beads on the bottom. I find it very interesting but I wish to find out more about it.Thanks for your help.

Not as a familyname bearer but as a tribe member. My parents and otherfamily members always looked as this as being a discrase andnever wanted to talk about it. They figured the the times were changing and the world would not accept the Indian Heritage. I hope that you will allow me to be counted, as my fathers before me. I've grown up living near the Mississippi, and love the area. The drive down Itaska and Aitken county roads 3 and 10 south towards Palisade is great. Some gravel road, but right next to the river with great views in some spots. I hope I am able to experience the great river's beauty for the rest of my life.

In reference to your page about Dubuque, Iowa, I don't believe that Hwy 52 south leads to King, Iowa from here. I really don't think there is such a place around here, perhaps you mean Maquoketa. It was interesting to read that the Town Clock Plaza won an award 30 years ago, considering that there is a movement afoot to rip it out. Some people imagine that the pedestrian area is at fault for the decline of downtown businesses. Also, the Native Americans with whom Julien Dubuque lived and mined lead were actually of the Fox tribe. The Meskwaki are a relatively modern-day conglomeration of Fox and Sauk. The most famous Sauk in history is Black Hawk, who led the last great Indian uprising in this part of the country. He was quite a favorite with the public after his defeat, which is why so many places & businesses are named after him.I think you could write quite a bit more about Dubuque. A thin sprinking of paragraphs doesn't really touch the complexity of this historic river city.

Enjoyed your site very much! Will be back! For all your history buff travelers; There was a large Sac, village located below Millville, Ia., where the Turkey River flows into the Mississippi. This was when the first white men came to the area. They also have, Estes Point where an American Flag always flies, the site of where a trooper was chased off the bluff by Indians. There is a lot of history around all the river, perhaps someone could compile some of it for you.

I return annually to visit friends and relatives and spend as much time exploring along the river as possible each trip. Next fall we are planning a leisurly driving tour from Davenport to Minneapolis. We hope to find the information on your site to help make our trip more informed and enjoyable.

My mother was born here near Sugar Creek back in the late 20's to early thirties. She really can't remember exactly where her house was, so any info would be great. Her fathers name was Lorenzo Wallace and his wife's name was Katherine. Also there was a book written about the area and her family was included in it but we don't know the name of that either! Again, thanks for all your help. Great site! Please e-mail me with any info.

I grew up in st. cloud 3 blocks from the mississippi. Sauk Rapids is just 'across the river' and i guess it and the beaver islands were the uppermost navigable point. Anyhow, regarding the Great River Road, it has always been one of my great aspirations (okay, maybe just a neat idea!) to drive from Itasca to New Orleans. So I'm starting to do a little research on it. Looks like this will get me part of the way there.

Prairie Du Chien is one of my favorite city's, but I thought Prairie Du Chien was was the first city in Wisconsin, cause Wisconsin means meeting of waters, and that's where Wisconsin and Mississippi River meets so they called this land Wisconsin and so Prairie Du Chien was the first city in Wisconsin but I see that you probably mean that Green Bay was the first town in this area that we then called Wisconsin oh well i am probably losing you but oh well I like Prairie Du Chien's and La Crosse's history a lot. So another question how much population do you have over there now?

Balltown,Ia. on the GREAT RIVER ROAD is a small town with lots of things to do. We have the HVNLEE Bed and Breakfast, an old rectory beautifully made over into a B&B. We have two Antique Stores and Iowa's oldest Bar nominated to the historical register, that has wonderful antiques and great food. We have the "Wooden Boxes and Dried Flowers" shed, which many tourist find very interesting. But most of all we have the most beautiful view of the mighty Mississippi River, any where. Last but not least the friendliest people in Iowa, live in Balltown. Come spend the day with us and stay over at the beautiful B&B that overlooks the town and the river.

I am blessed to live on the GREAT RIVER ROAD in Balltown, Iowa. I can look out my window and view the most spectacular view in Iowa. I can see the magnificent bluffs of Wisconsin and the tow boats pushing their cargo up and down the mighty Mississippi River. I am a 56 year old chemical engineer who lives in the Houston area. I THINK I have a pretty good knowledge of American history, but I never heard of the Battle of Bad Axe until the last WEEK. I had heard of Chief Black Hawk. I was also familiar with the Sac and Fox tribes. I read about the tribes activities during the War of 1812 when my home state of Missouri was still a territory. I also had the opportunity to visit Joseph's Smith's first home in Nauvoo, IL. The log portion of that structure served as a trading post for the Sax and Fox and it dates back to 1804. Enjoyed reading your site.

I was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois in 1946. I have enjoyed living on the Mississippi, especially visiting lock & dam 21. Watching the boats and the people working on them was a real joy. How something that power could move with such grace is such a mystery. I recently built the American Beauty tow boat in a kit model. Even though I live in Kansas now, it reminds of the days I spent on the Mississippi river.

We have always loved the Mississippi Valley and, in fact we have a property available on a high bluff over Ferryville consisting of roughly 3 and a half acres of meadow and two thirds old growth forest. The price is sure to beat the area realtor offerings. Really, it is beautiful and you will love all the eagles and flocks of wild turkeys. Our favorite place to stay in Prairie du Chien is the Prairie Motel, because they let our well behaved dog come with us when we go trout fishing in Northeast Iowa, and they have nice woodsy grounds and very clean comfortable large rooms; I am sorry they are not on your website, because I wanted their email address to tell Terry and Linda Thompson what an excellent business they run, and how grateful two busy Iowa lawyers are for the chance to stay with them during our fishing trips.

Very cool web site, especially for those of us that have moved away. I grew up in Balltown, IA with my back yard being one of the most beautiful views in all of Iowa and in my opinion, all of the country. If you want a good old fashion slice of Americana, just go to Balltown via the Great River Road and check out the view. Living in Colorado I have seen some wonderful, breath-taking views, but the big white farm house and classic red barn in the foreground of the mighty Mississippi, surrounded by acres and acres of farmland holds a very precious place in my heart. Stop by Breitbach's restaurant, the oldest family owned restaurant in Iowa. Ask the owner Mike Breitbach to tell you the story of the restaurant. Treat yourself to a big home cooked meal, probably prepared by my mom. So load up the car and get your waving hand ready because the friendly people of Balltown will give you a wonderful welcome. Other areas you will want to stop by on your trip are Eagle Point Park in Dubuque, IA, the Guttenberg overlook, Pikes Peak, and Effigy Mounds.

Beautiful web site! I am in search of my grandfathers family, who I think may have come from McGregor, Iowa. My grandfathers name was Al Brooker, which may have been changed from Bruckner. Don't know why the name change. Maybe some of you history buffs can help me out. I believe my great- grand mothers name was Lizzy Snelling. I have an old snapshot taken in McGregor in 1921. It shows several adult males one of which I believe to be my grandfather. I think the occasion might be the death of his mother? as I have a photo of an older woman in her casket, that had to be taken in that same period of time. The photo was taken by Fryklund Studio. Grandfather also had a brother named John, and possibly a sister named Emma. The two brothers left on the early 1900's and homesteaded in Montana. Does any one there know of this family. Please e-mail me. Thanks. Madeline

I, like so many others are surprised to find so much about a small town. I am searching for historical information about John Ross, he was apparently a 'first' settler in New Albin. Was he related to George Ross, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence? Was he related to John Ross of the Cherokee? I understand that there has been a book written about the early settlers of New Albin, where can I purchase a copy, and what is the title?

I was born in Prairie and grew up in the Mt Hope area. I left and entered service straight out of high school almost 27 years ago. The one thing I learned in those years is no matter where you go or what you do with yourself there will always be a part of your heart that will forever yearn for home. I don't get back there near what I should. I am still exploring this country of ours, but as Dorothy said in "The Wizard of Oz", "There is no place like home!" The beauty of the countryside, family, the adults you grew to admire as well as the friends you grew up with have never been matched anywhere I have been in my travels. I have met a lot of people in my travels but none, except for my wife has ever touched my heart the way the people of South West Wisconsin has.

My paternal family genealogy rests along the Great River Road, my father Robert A. Kamm, was born in Buena Vista Township, Clayton County, Iowa, just outside of North Buena Vista, his father George C. Kamm was born there also. My paternal grandmother Hattie Wolter Kamm was born in Guttenberg and raised in North Buena Vista. Some of my older relatives are buried in Guttenberg, Sherrill's Mound, and at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery outside of Balltown-Waupeton, Iowa. The Great River Road is a lovely drive. This is a very interesting site.

My grandfather moved to North McGregor in 1869. His name was George D. Wells. He married Fannie Moncrief there in 1871. My dad, Leo Wells, was born there in 1888. My grandfather lived there until his death in 1926. My dad left home at age 15, so he didn't know much about his family, so I'm searching.

I am wondering if there are any people by the name of Sorlie still in that area. Our great-grandparents (Amund & Live) came from that area around 1870. Our grandfather Peter was born in Lansing in 6-9-1874. If anyone has any information about these people contact us please.

The reason I am on this website is because I recently purchased a watercolor Painting of the old spiral bridge in Hastings. I just had to find something out about it. I understand it was torn down in 1951. I feel I have a real treasure here. Now I would like to find out more about the artist Edward Brewer. The painting is dated 1948.

I was asked "What do you want to see?" I had no idea. Thanks to your information, I not only have an idea, I realize I want to see so much that it can't be done in a couple of days. I'll have to come back! Definitely spend more time soliciting shopping, dining, etc. businesses to get them to advertise with your sites! It will greatly benefit the traveler & the businesses!

What if you sent letters to these businesses to let them know & maybe participate with info? We need to get more items listed for all the towns. This site was very nice, and included a lot of towns. The one thing missing are entertainment places for the family such as fishing sites, road rentals, go cart racing. Things that would interest families after the parks close. It's hard to find the info needed to make arrangements ahead of time. We are going up to Prairie du Chien tomorrow 8/3/99 for 2-3 days.

I was born and raised in Viroqua and taught in rural schools on the river in the good old days. My favorite drive has been and still is along 35. No matter what the Season, it is beautiful. We will be entertaining friends from Europe this year and we always take them to see the River and if we're lucky a barge going through the locks. They always want to see the Mississippi. Isn't that funny? They have the Danube and the Thames, and the Rhine Rivers and they can't wait the see our Mississippi.
