Julien Dubuque Monument at the Mines of Spain Recreation Area in Dubuque, Iowa

The structure was completed in 1937. it is 4,818 feet long and contains 16 gates. It is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and offers tours on Sundays at 2 p.m., Memorial Day-Labor Day. Call 319-582-0881.

Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

These sites features award-winning All-American Rose gardens, water features, outstanding berms of annual and perennial flowers, orchards, prairie grasses, wild flowers, vines, cacti, ground covers, ornamental trees and shrubs and has the country's largest public hosta garden. There is a gift shop, the viewing porch, botanical library and the vista decks located in the visitor center. Although, admission is free, donations are appreciated. Tours are available. They are open May to November and are 3125 W. 32nd St. Call 319-556-2100 for more information.

Mines of Spain Recreation Area

The Mines of Spain is a 1,380-acre area rich in natural and historical significance which includes the E. B. Lyons Prairie Woodland Preserve and the Julien Dubuque Monument. The area includes steep, wooded limestone bluff lands, remnants of early 1800s era lead mines, an interpretive nature center, displays and hiking trails.
