Harpers
Ferry, Iowa
is one of the oldest settlements in Allamakee
County. It was once known as Vailsville and was platted as the village of Winfield in
1852. 1860, the name was changed to Harpers Ferry in honor of David
Harper, who was an influential man in the county and the leading spirit in
the development of the town. He provided
ferry service
to Lynxville,
Wisconsin across the river. During the Steamboat days, it served as an
important port.
During the summer months it is a popular fishing resort, growing from a population of over 250 to over 4,000. The waterways and sandbars in the playground of Iowa are popular for boating, swimming, and water-skiing. Harpers Ferry is an outstanding vacation spot during the winter months too. In addition to ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross county skiing, this area offers many natural wonders. there are miles of crispy snow on the rolling countryside, and the 8,075 acres of raw beauty visible at Effigy Mounds and the Yellow River State Park present Mother Nature at her very best! Harpers Ferry is located above high water on a level plateau which extend back nearly a mile to the bluffs and three miles up and down the river. Around town are large numbers of Indian burial grounds. The beautiful wooded bluffs, the nearby trout streams, and the many islands, lakes and sloughs of the Mississippi in this area have attracted increasingly large numbers of fishermen, hunters, and boaters to this friendly community each year. There are many sloughs and backwaters in this area, most notably Harpers Slough, where there is a small park. A great many privately owned weekend or vacation cottages have been built near here in recent years.
