Fish Farm Mounds
Located six miles north of Lansing on Hwy 26, Fish Farm Mounds is one of the numerous Indian burial grounds in NE Iowa. This is a 500 acre state preserve containing prehistoric Native American Burial mounds in a forest clearing near the river. Capt. Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, surveyed this area in 1832. Nearby is a railroad that follows his approximate route downriver to a spot near Waukon Junction, called Paint Rock Bluff. Wildlife is plentiful in the preserve, making it a popular hunting ground. A wayside rest area with picnic tables invites visitors to relax.
Overlooking Lansing, the park offers a spectacular view of fifty miles of Mississippi River valley. From 450 above the river, you can see three states from the park. This access is the shortest drive from the river of any overlook in the Upper Mississippi Valley. Mt. Hosmer has three picnic areas and five scenic overlooks.
