Lansing,
named after Lansing, Michigan, lies in a small valley alongside the Mississippi
River in Allamakee County.
Lansing has a heritage encompassing the wonders of the Mound Builders, Indian Wars, steam
boating trade, commercial fishing, clamming and button making; Daniel Boone's son surveyed
an Indian Treaty line through the site of Lansing in 1832. Lansing is now a sports,
recreational and agricultural service center. French fur trapping was the earliest economic activity in the area. Their historic trading routes the Chime de Voyagers extended from the Mississippi River west to the Missouri River. A short walking tour of Lansing reveals a mix of old river town architecture, Victorian and Greek revival architecture, and unique residential and commercial buildings. Lansing is noted for it's many limestone buildings dating back to the mid-1800's. Two of these buildings, the Grain Elevator and the Old Stone School, have been restored and are now listed with the National Register of Historic Places. |
