The one sure
stop in this area is in Balltown. The magnificent Balltown view has been
featured in a variety of magazines and newspapers. Balltown is also the proud home to
Breitbach's, Iowa's oldest bar and restaurant. Breitbach's has been serving up homemade
goodness & homespun hospitality since 1852 and has served it up to such famous people
as outlaw Jesse James and Brooke Shields. Iowa's oldest food and drinking establishment
was opened in 1852 by federal permit issued from President Millard Fillmore. Jacob
Breitbach, Great-Great-Grandfather of the present owner, worked for the original owner and
purchased the tavern in 1891. Since that time, the Breitbach family has been in
continuous ownership of this historical establishment which is now on its sixth generation and
seventh expansion. this unique structure has been nominated to the Register of Historic
Buildings and its present owners, Mike and Cindy Breitbach, work hard to maintain the
restaurant's rich heritage. North Buena Vista, a town of approximately 150 people, is the home of the Immaculate Conception Church and its famous "Buenie Picnic". The annual event draws hundreds of people from the tri-State area. Built into a hillside near the church, A religious shrine offers a delightful atmosphere for reflection on the charm of the area. |
