First platted in
1852, Minnesota City was first called Rollingstone City. This
village was settled by a group of New York mechanics seeking a new start
in the west. The group, who were known as the "Western Farm and
Village Association", began looking along the Mississippi in
Minnesota for a suitable place to build a town. Having found the
spot, they returned to home to New York, Created maps and began promoting
the new farming community they found. Soon many settlers, eager for a fresh start, began heading west for the new settlement that they thought already existed. Riverboat captains at Galena, Illinois were puzzled when people asked to be taken to the non existent town of Rollingstone City. Nevertheless, the settlers were taken to the spot marked on there maps and left with nothing but the river and the trees to welcome them to their new home. The town grew to over 400 people in just a matter of months, which most of the people not having any prior knowledge of farming or pioneer life. In the winter, many people died and the rest moved away. Some returned to their home in New York and others moved to nearby towns like Winona, MN. Presently, there is a town a few miles away from Minnesota City called Rollingstone, but it has no connection to the early settlement.
