Camp
LaCupolis is located on the bank of the Mississippi River at the lower
end of Lake Pepin. Here you will find some of the best fishing in all of
Wabasha County. In an area just outside the camp harbor is the best spot to catch
your limit of walleye, sauger, northern, large and small mouth bass,
striped bass and panfish. Other choice spots are out on the main channel
or in the quiet bays and backwaters. If in doubt, feel free to ask many of
the veteran anglers for advice on their
favorite fishing spots.
in the late 1800s, early settlers stopped at Camp LaCupolis to camp overnight before continuing their way up the river by boat to Lake City, nine miles up the river. Camp LaCupolis is Greek for Camp Lake City. Camp LaCupolis also offers rustic fishing cabins and boats for rent, bait and other supplies for sale, and a campground. You can launch and dock your boat in the protected harbor. Gulls and eagles are commonly found in the area. Travelers will enjoy the marvelous views of the Mississippi River, the colorful leaves in the Fall and good, old fashioned hospitality of the locals. Reads Landing was named for a Charles Reads, An English solder bought it as a Dakota Trading Post in 1847. The post was first occupied from 1810 to 1830 by Augustin Rocque, who was a nephew of Chief Wapasha. Its location made it a natural hub for commerce and transportation. Read bought it to take advantage of its position along the bans on the Mississippi and the mouth of the Chippewa River. Logging played an important part of life in early Reads Landing. Countless logs were floated down the Chippewa River in large rafts, some covering as much as 3 1/2 acres. Several hundred raftsman were often in town waiting the arrival of logs and floated them down the Mississippi. More than 2000 of these rafts were carried from this area until the most choice trees had been removed by 1915. At one time, this was a lively town that offered a thriving population, 27 motels, 21 saloons, many stores and the second brick schoolhouse built in Minnesota. Unfortunately, the arrival of the railroad wiped out the support of the steam boating trade and the end of logging in early 1900, nearly doomed the town. Today, about 200 residents live in Reads Landing, which is in Wabasha County. The village has retained its scenic splendor as a tourist attraction and a Mecca for fisherman. It is colorful and attractive in its location, from the widening of the Mississippi at the foot of Lake Pepin to the lofty bluffs overhead. |
