Located directly
across the Mississippi River from La Crosse, WI,
La Crescent is a town of about 4,500 residents making it the
largest town in Houston County. La
Crescent is famous for its views of the Mississippi River and it's many apple orchards and
is considered the Apple Capital of Minnesota.
Around 1856, a man named John S. Harris came to La Crescent and established an orchard on the western edge of town where the bluff starts to rise. The sheltered river valley, fertile soil and late frost allowed him to profitably grow many varieties of apples even though many people doubted that apples could be grown in the cold Minnesota climate. In 1866, with Harris's successful crop of 20 varieties led to the creation of the Minnesota Horticultural Society. La Crescent was first known as Manton. The name was changed when a rivalry developed with nearby La Crosse, the settlers here petitioned to change the name. IT seems that the locals thought La Crosse was named for the Crusader's emblem of the cross. So Manton's name was changed the name in reference the crescent, the Mohammedan emblem of power, to symbolize their fierce competition. Here you will find many markets selling
apples, honey, and other organic products. There are many outdoor activities to do when
you are in the area, such as biking, hiking, fishing, biking, bird watching, skiing and
90 miles of groomed snowmobiling trails. |
