Lake City is located in Wabasha County right on gorgeous Lake Pepin, which is known as the birthplace of water-skiing. The sport of water-skiing, which is now enjoyed by millions people, was invented by Ralph Samuelson in 1922 on the waters of Lake Pepin. Ralph was only 18 years old when he created this daring sport. Replicas of the first water skis, which were created from pine boards, are on display in the Chamber of Commence office. The village and Lake Pepin get their names from the Pepin brothers, who were two of the first French trappers in the area. This small community was first settled in 1854. In 1864, The Legislature approved Lake City as a major grain marketing port. As a result, for a short time the town blossomed and too on a greater importance in the world of commerce. In addition to water-skiing, some of the greatest boating in the Midwest can be found here. On a sunny , summer day, you will find hundreds of sailboats, cruisers, Jet-Skis and other watercraft on Lake Pepin. Local marinas offer overnight docking facilities, fuel, and other supplies. One marina even offers a Lake City's fishing pier, A breakwater which is used by thousands of anglers each year. Lake City is also known as the "City of Parks", which includes over 250 acres of park land. Three lake parks offer playground equipment of the kids and spectacular views of the river for everybody. |
