Dakota
is a quaint town snuggly located at the foot of three radiating
coulees. Jeremiah Tibbitts, at the age of 17, started trading here
with the group of Dakota Indians in 1853. Dresbach is located just beyond Lock and Dam #7, at the lower end of a wooded, bluff-walled coulee. The town was formed a few years after Dakota when George Dresbach quarried a type of limestone called Winona Travertine from the nearby hills. Nearby is Mineral Bluff, a sandstone hill, which rises 405 and overlooks Dresbach. There has been traces of coal, lead and silver found here, as well as a skull with a copper hatchet stuck in it. |
