The
town of Homer is located five miles south of Winona,
which you can catch a glimpse of up the valley. Here is where Francois du
Chouquette trade to establish trade with Chief Wabasha's tribe in 1830. Unfortunately,
he was forced to move to the safer location of Prairie
du Chien, WI due to raids from the Sac and Fox Indians. The first
settler was Willard Bunnell, who was a townsite planner and speculator. In
1849, He moved from the river bottom and into a home he built on a nearby
hillside. The house still stands today and is maintained my the Winona
Historical Society. The town is named after Bunnell's birthplace in New
York.
Near Lamoille, you will pass two impressive half cones that are precipitate and wooded on the river side but bare and rounded on the far side. These bluffs are, among the most picturesque in the upper gorge, may be seen to better advantage on a southward journey, which some people compare to a miniature version of the Swiss Matterhorns. |
