Onalaska,
located just north of La Crosse on the Great River Road, is known as the fastest growing
city in western Wisconsin; since 1970 the town's population has doubled to over 14,000
residents. Onalaska, which is in La Crosse County, is built on a ridge overlooking the picturesque Lake Onalaska and the
Black River. During the great Ice Age, glaciers flowed around the Coulee Region instead of
over it creating what is called a "driftless area." We can now enjoy the beauty
of the Onalaska countryside with its steep, rocky bluffs, winding valleys, rolling hills
and beautiful Lake Onalaska.
With the Mississippi and Black Rivers nearby, fishing and sailing are waiting for you, with the best fishing available right in Lake Onalaska. Lake Onalaska (Pool #7 on the Mississippi River) offers year-round fishing. During autumn migration you can see Canada geese, ducks, swans, and other waterfowl on their journey south. The town's name was chosen from it's founder, Thomas G. Rowe, in 1851. It comes from a passage in his favorite poem, "The Pleasures of Hope", which spoke of the "Oonalaska Shore". Onalaska has much more to offer both the visitor and the resident. There are so many things to do, no matter what your interests are or what the season is. Choose from: hunting, fishing, bicycling, hiking, riding, golfing, picnicking, tennis, swimming, camping, car races in summer, semi-professional basketball, snowmobiling, cross-country and downhill skiing, concerts, theater, big name entertainment, fine dining and browsing through a large regional mall and many other shopping centers. Fisherman will find Largemouth bass, Crappies, Bullheads, Walleye as well as other types. There are plenty of fine restaurants and shopping centers, including many antique shops. The Onalaska OmniCenter often hosts Business meetings, family reunions, picnics, receptions, seminars, conferences, and trade shows. Whatever you like to do, we have it all here within a few miles of Onalaska. |
