Trempealeau has some of the most colorful scenery in this part of the Mississippi Valley. It was voted one of the ten most scenic drives in America. It boasts all of the greenery of spring to the blaze of autumn to the undisturbed snowy slopes of winter. The Great River Road causes you to zigzag right through this sleepy hamlet of just over a hair over 1000 people. Trempealeau which means "Mountain Soaking in Water," is Western Wisconsin's Recreational Headquarters. Minutes from Perrot State Park and the National Wildlife Refuge, a crossroads for the Great River State Bicycle Trail and with several lakes, the Long Lake Canoe Trail, and the Mississippi River at hand.

Trempealeau is named for nearby Trempealeau Mountain, a 384 foot rise completely surrounded by water. This geological oddity is located just off shore from the main visitor area of Perrot State Park. It is one of only three solid rock islands along the full length of the Mississippi that is as high as the neighboring bluffs. This made it and important navigational aid for early steamboat pilots. The French called it "la montagne qui trempe a' l'eau" or "the mountain steeped in water", this is where the name, Trempealeau comes from.

With camping, hiking, biking, canoeing, bird watching, boating, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling available, Trempealeau and the surrounding
Trempealeau county area is becoming more popular as a recreation destination. There is even a 100-mile network of paved bikeways that passes through town. This is a place where you can forget about the pressures of today's modern world and completely surround yourself in beautiful landscape and the serenity of the land.

Trempealeau's entire two blocks of downtown are listed on the National Register of Historic places. Following a fire which destroyed all but five downtown businesses in 1888, legend has it that "a team of 100 horses" moved the remaining buildings to their current location on Main Street. This downtown area, with the Mississippi River at its base, is representative of all the towns that flourished along the river freight route. This historic village was founded in 1851 and was the third settled village in the state.
