Visitor Information
Originally called Holmes Landing, Fountain City is the oldest community in Buffalo County. It was later established as Fountain City in 1854. In 1839, Thomas Holmes came up river to settle and to trade with the Indians and service steamboats. Soon, This town flourished with taverns, churches, schools, and even an opera house. At one point or another, there was a total of six breweries located in this town. Fountain City gets it's name from the early residents of this community who found ways to tap into some of the many springs in the area that bubbles out of the bluffs and make fountains out of them. The hills around this section
of the river offer some of the finest year-round scenery along the entire Mississippi
River. Eagle Bluff, highest point on the Mississippi River, Indian Head Rock, a natural rock
formation resembling a chief's face and Three Sisters, a row of three similar hills, are
all located at Fountain City. One of the most breath-taking views of the entire area can
be seen from Eagle Bluff, which stands 550 feet above the river. The Fountain City area is part of the Great
Northern Flyway for migratory birds and home to bald eagles, great blue
herons and egrets. |
