Nelson is located on the Mississippi
River in Buffalo County, at the junction of Highways 25 and 35. The town of Wabasha,
MN is directly across
the river and can be reached by the interstate bridge. The Nelson Bottoms has every
kind of fish, bird and animal and provides some of the nation's best duck shooting each
fall. This are is terrific for fishing. Walleye fishing is sensational here, The northern
run up to "muskie size," the biggest large-mouth bass lie among the lily pads
and this has long been known as the "home of the small-mouth bass."
During the summer, you can frequently see hang gliders as they glide forever from the bluffs 500 feet above Nelson. Nearby is an area known as the Tiffany Bottoms. This huge section of backwater adjoining the Mississippi has thousands of acres of woods where deer abound. This area is truly a sportsman's paradise. Visitor Information
The view of the river, back water sloughs and Lock and Dam #4 is breathtaking and a must to see. Visitors also enjoy exploring charming stairway "streets" that head up the river bluffs, and the town's terraced cemetery with unique tombstones. The main streets, lined with historic 19th Century buildings, feature gift, art and antique shops and most stores and homes have a view of the Mississippi River. Early settlers were attracted to the area because it reminded them of there homeland, Switzerland. Alma also has the largest fishing float on the Mississippi, mini golf, canoes and water bikes for rent, overnight boat docking at the Great River Harbor and Campgrounds, houseboat and fishing boat rentals at Northport Marine, live theater productions at Mainstreet Theater, historic walking tours, a walking trail up to Buena Vista Park, and landscaped, secret backyard gardens.
