Lock and Dam #8
Located just south of Genoa, Lock and Dam #8 was completed in 1937. The main lock chamber is 110 feet wide and 600 feet long and is filled and emptied by gravity. The lift difference between the upper pool and lower pools is 11 feet. It takes 5 1/2 million gallons of water to fill the lock. There is an observation deck where you can watch barges and small craft lock through. There is no fee for this.
Historical Marker
A few miles south of Genoa was the site of the infamous Battle of Bad Axe where American soldiers massacred Black Hawk's followers as they tried to flee across the Mississippi River into Iowa on August 1, 1832 and again on August 3.
