Monday, September 10, 2001 - Brendan takes on the
Mighty Mississippi

Thanks for agreeing to host Brendan Battenfelder's canoe trip down the
Mississippi River. He is well on his way. His friend from Baltimore, Matt
Knoepfle drove him out to Lake Itasca last weekend. They put the canoe in the water at 6:30 PM CST on Sunday, September 1, 2001. Believe it or not
they did about 4 hours, two in the dark. On Thursday night, September the
6th they met up with two other canoe's and spent the night in a hotel room
in Bemidji. Brendan's friend Matt headed home. On Saturday night, September 9th he camped on the East Side of Lake Winnibigoshish. His plan
was depending on the weather to canoe the lake in one day or two. He does
have an email that he has set up just for the trip for people to write to

Below is my planned Mail pick up list. I plan to stop in these
towns and go to the post office to get mail drops. I hope the schedule
will remain the same, although it will probably not. If it does change, I
will e-mail or write to let everyone know if I am running ahead or behind
schedule along the river. If you feel the urge to send a letter, please
send it a few days early incase I am a day or so ahead.

He is planning to buy food on the way. As I mentioned before he is an
Eagle Scout with a lot of canoeing, backpacking and rock climbing
experience.
Well he just called (8:30 EST, September 10, 2001). He did 28 miles today
and is spending the night Chasset, just north of Grand Rapids. He is
planning on spending the day in Grand Rapids looking for a place to check his
email and pick up his mail. He had to do a little paddling backwards today when a Black Bear decided the river was his. Also saw to Bald Eagles
today.
Well that is it for now. I should have some pictures later this week.
