Wednesday, September 19, 2001 - Kicking back in
Brainerd, MN
(from Brendan Battenfelder)
Hey all.
I’m in Brainerd, MN. I am a bit early because the water is moving faster then I originally thought it would. I plan to be
in Red Wing, MN, my next stop on the 28th of Sept. I got into town around 11.00 AM this morning
and an amazing breakfast. Pancakes are a miracle, not to mention bacon, which I almost died for at the time. I went to the local
YMCA and got a $2.00 shower, so if you are ever in need of a shower stop by your local YMCA. I washed my
clothes and headed for the library where there was a three-hour wait for the internet. So to the BAR I go. Oh to have
a cold beer, or multiple cold beers. I have not yet achieved Penn State standards
of drunkenness, but I will soon try.

Things are still going great. I have spent a few nights alone now and that is crazy for the mind. I have resorted to
breaking down firewood to approximate size classes to pass the loneliness of the evenings. But I am
reading "Round Ireland with a Fridge". YOU should all check it out. It is
rather humorous.
I have seen more wonderful eagles, otters and some deer. I met a fine gentleman yesterday who informed me in his
mid-day drunkenness that the water I was on went all the way to Little Falls MN, a hundred or so miles
down. It’s good to know that I was not the only one that fell asleep in
Geography class. I hope to be in St Paul MN by the 25th, where Kate plans to join me. I can't wait. Someone else to paddle all day while I kick
back and enjoys the sites. There is a planned party in St Louis on the 12th if I can make it there by then. I'll let everyone know how it goes if I
don’t tackle any barstool. I hope everyone is still doing well, and I thank
everyone who sent some inspiring messages. I have to run and find an open bar; I will say hello again in St Paul.
Have a good one
Brendan
