Brendan, a canoe, and the Mississippi River
Brendan Battenfelder's journey from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

Friday, September 29, 2001 - I'm out of the city, and you all missed the Mall of America!

(from Brendan Battenfelder)

Well Red Wing is a nice town, but it's freezing. The post office, library, supermarket and Taco Jon's are all within ten steps of each other, what a wonderful thing. Things are going well for Kate and I. The river has gotten much wider, but has no current.

There are 29 locks and dams to go through from St Paul down, and we have only made it past 5. The water  pools up behind the dams; therefore, you have to paddle twice as hard to get anywhere. So the last two days have been long and hard, but we are still alive. Kate brought some awesome dehydrated foods so my diet has become much more exciting. Thanks Kate's Mom for the Raviolis.

We spent a day in Minneapolis and got to go to the Mall of America. Oh
what a wonderfully boring place. They have an amusement park called Camp Snoopy in the middle and they have about 15 bars in the mall. So of course we decided to sample some of the local 99 cent Budweiser. Malls near me don't sell beer.

We were then treated to a wonderful dinner at Brandon and Tiffany's house. Brandon picked us up and we spent the evening dining at his house. You all need to go to his web site Riverroads.com. You must. It's a really cool site with descriptions of the towns and sites along the river.

Well we are off to Winona, but first a place to eat some warm food. I have no idea when we are going to get to the next post office but hopefully it will be a day or so ahead of schedule.

Thanks for the letters and the new socks,
Brendan
