Monday, October 8, 2001 - With sand in places you could only imagine

Hey all.

We are in Cassville, Wisconsin. Beanie babies are on clearance sale here.
Other then that there is probably no other reason to stop here. Today is Columbus day, and would you believe that the Post Office feels the need to take the day off. I would probably just go and set the tent up again and sit in the closest bar, but Kate has talked me into moving on. Probably the
best idea. So if you sent a letter to Cassville, thank you, but I'll have to pick it up in Oquawka, Il. Which should be an exciting place merely judging by its name.

We are doing well, though Kate has decided that Canoeing is not her  favorite way to spend the day. We have seen some beautiful eagles and the People at Effigy National Monument overlooking the river have seen a
beautiful view of Kate and I peeing in the woods. Who knew that there would  be people up on the bluffs watching us. We spent a night in Winona, MN at the home of Dottie and Clem. They have a relative that works with my father (oh what a lucky person) and emailed me explaining that they would love for us to stop by. They took us out to eat at a wonderful bar, which they must frequent. The entire bar knew them, we even got free drinks. We then returned to their house for the evening. It was a wonderful thing to shower and wash our clothes. Thank you so much Clem and Dottie for everything.

Camping has become interesting since leaving St Paul. The maps no longer  list campsites, therefore we are forced to find sandy Islands within the  National Wildlife refuge to camp. For the most part, good sites are  relatively hard to find, but occasionally we are forced into muddy 4 by 4  areas avoiding the poison ivy. But God knows what will happen when the NWR Islands stop.

All of this stuff needs to fit into one little canoe. Yes, it can be done!

I have received many answers to the questions I purposed weeks earlier.
1. What are porcupines good for
* Nothing they just eat sleep fart and reproduce all day (I'm jealous, but then again I don't do much all day either)
*They eat insects
*They puncture car tires, therefore flipping cars and killing people

2. Do geese know where south is when migrating.
* Yes, but they are flying around gathering into larger groups before heading south.
* They may not need to go any farther south, and are looking for there  favorite spot to stop.
* They are following the one with the map, so ask him, not me

3.Do older eagles loose there white head and tail
* the verdict is still out, but the consensus is that I'm seeing a different bird.

4. What do you call a person Paddling the entire river.
* MIN-NOWS Minnesota to New Orleans
* Thru-boats
* Gulfers
* Thru paddlers
* Idiots, crazy, Ludicrous (that may be my favorite)
-tired, dirty, and cold - Kate's answer

Well thanks for the replies and sorry for the length of this email, But I had a lot to say. I hope everyone is doing well. I hope to be in Oquawka, Il around the 16th or so, We shall see. Oh and I am out of Minnesota, We crossed over into Iowa on Oct 5th, so 33 days in Minnesota. Some how I'll make it to New Orleans in 7 weeks.

Have a wonderful day, and wonder what it would be like to live with
everything covered in sand for a week, I HATE SAND!
