Sunday, November 25, 2001 - 210 from the end
Hey all,
I made it to Baton Rouge yesterday, The start of the big ocean vessels. I
saw a few docked and they are massive, but I have not paddled next to a
moving ship yet. Soon though. The river is getting sluggish so things are
going a bit slower then planned, but I'm moving along.
I have had amazing luck and hospitality the last few weeks. Before I got to Natchez I met Ken
Colbert who offered a beer and more if I found him in town the next day.
When I got to town I set up camp behind the Under the Hill Saloon and was
offered dinner at someone's house. I met Keith, Melissa and Brent, wonderful people who live in Natchez (Keith is actually from
CO.) and they fed me well. Keith then gave me the phone number of the Dupree family who
lived in a town two days further South.
So after some hesitation I called and asked if they wouldn't mind a guest for some turkey. Its odd inviting
yourself to someone's house for the Holidays. But it turned out to be an
awesome experience. They were such kind people and we had shrimp egg plant,
that must be a southern thanksgiving dish. Though I feel bad because I managed to help Glenn finish every beer he could scrounge up.
I then received an email from a fella named Darren who had hiked with Fausa
a few years back. He and his girlfriend Bev picked me up at a ferry landing
and took me off to taste some wonderful southern cooking and to hear some
Blues. Life could not get any better. I even tried some Crawfish
Ettoufee. I have never eaten, nor ever thought of eating an Ettoufee. But it was
delicious.
So things are going well and if I ever stop meeting such kind people I will make it to the end. I am excited to get to New Orleans and kick back
and relax a bit. This will be my last email until I make it to Jon's house,
so cross your fingers and check your email in 9 or 10 days.
210 miles to go.
Brendan
There is one more sentence to this email, but do not scroll down and read it
for another ten days. Wait until I finish.
I just wanted to see if you would wait.
Thank you for all the support!
