Brendan, a canoe, and the Mississippi River
Brendan Battenfelder's journey from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

Wednesday, December 5, 2001 - The next land you see will be Cuba

WAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"The next land you will see is Cuba" - A fisherman in south pass I made it. I made it to the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday morning around 10:30 or so. It was such an awesome feeling to be in the gulf. nothing but water. Though those feelings soon turn into. Oh crap the waves are huge out here. Two fisherman, Mike and Ron Racca rescued me from the gulf and brought me back up to pilot town. The last few days of the trip have been awesome.

I met so many wonderful people. I stopped off at the Plaquemines Parish
Orange Festival and met some great people, including the Mike and Tony Vogt and some folks traveling the US, Jacque and Kevin. Again I found it difficult to avoid the Budweiser trailer and the night got even more interesting. It ended up with me loosing my hat and suffering in the sun
the next 2 days.

But Jon picked me up Tuesday night and I am now attempting to adjust to living indoors and trying not to be hit by cars when i venture out. I have yet to try to go to the bathroom in Jon's house plants. I wandered into the city today to see some sights. I had some gumbo and a beer after the first beer I ordered was spilled all over me, by the waiter.

Well its not like my clothes are clean anyway. Then I went to visit the river and read the letters I got. It was a real strange experience to be on the bank of the river, knowing I was not getting back out there. But I am excited to be finished. I plan to be down here until next week and Jon has promised good food, good beer, and good times.

Well I only have 3 minutes left so, I thank you all for the support and the laughs along the way. I will get back to the library again and fill you all in on some more detail and how New Orleans is treating me.

Take care,

Brendan
