Brendan, a canoe, and the Mississippi River
Brendan Battenfelder's journey from Lake Itasca to the Gulf of Mexico.

Background information

Brandon and I were surprised and pleased to find an email from James Battenfelder (Brendan's father) waiting for us when we returned from our New Orleans trip. His son, a 23-year-old graduate of Penn State University was about to embark on an ambitious journey down the Mississippi River, and we were asked to help chronicle it.

Brendan at the very beginning.

Brendan, an Eagle Scout, has been planning this trip for several years. A number of his friends have hiked the Appalachian Trail, but he had always had an interest in canoeing down the Mississippi.

Armed with detailed maps, supplies, and a canoe, Brendan set out on September 1st. A close friend, Matt Knoepfle, drove Brendan from Pennsylvania to Lake Itasca and spent the first four days with him. Aside from a few friends joining him briefly along the way, Brendan plans to make the trip alone. He won't be completely cut off from the world however - he's set up an email address that he can check from the road, as well as established mail stops along the way. He'd appreciate any words of encouragement, I'm sure!

Please check back often to hear updates from Brendan and his father, which should arrive frequently. We're so happy to be able to bring this courageous and adventurous journey to the World Wide Web and we hope you'll enjoy following around. Perhaps you'll even be inspired to take the trip yourself someday!
